Overview: Baltistan in Autumn Light
In autumn, Baltistan’s valleys turn from green to gold. Poplar lines, apricot orchards and willow-lined fields change colour against bare brown mountains and the first snow on the peaks. This trip is built for that season. Instead of day-tripping from Skardu, you stay in the valleys themselves, so you’re there at the best light, in the early morning and late afternoon.
You’ll spend two slow days in Shigar, around its restored 17th-century fort, orchards and old lanes, then follow the Shyok river east to Khaplu. There you’ll see the palace and the Chaqchan Mosque, founded in the 14th century and attributed to Syed Ali Hamadani. On the way back there’s time at the Kachura lakes before you fly out.
Deosai isn’t on the route: its road closes as autumn sets in. The colours don’t peak at the same time every year, so we confirm the likely window for your dates before you book. Heritage hotels in Shigar and Khaplu can be arranged on request, subject to availability.
