Overview: Plateau, Lakes, Desert & Forts
This is Skardu for travellers who want its full range in five days: a high-altitude plateau, alpine lakes, sand dunes in the mountains and a restored Balti fort. You stay in Skardu the whole time, so there’s no packing and moving each night. A private 4×4 and a local guide handle the tracks.
The centrepiece is a full day on the Deosai plains, one of the highest plateaus in the world, crossed by unpaved track to Sheosar Lake. Around it are Upper Kachura Lake, an afternoon in Skardu town above the Indus, the Katpana cold desert, and Shigar Valley with its 17th-century fort.
It’s adventurous without being technical. You won’t do any trekking or climbing, and you don’t need special kit, but you will spend long days on rough tracks and time above 4,000 m. Skardu flights depend on the weather, so we plan around your dates realistically.
