Overview: Across the Plateau to Astore
Most visitors see Deosai as a day trip and turn back at Sheosar Lake. This trip keeps going. From Skardu you cross the whole plateau, one of the highest in the world at an average of about 4,114 m, and come down its western side via Chilam into the green Astore valley.
The crossing is a full day of open grassland, streams and wide sky in Himalayan brown bear country. On the other side, Astore feels completely different: forested slopes and villages, and above them Rama Meadows and Rama Lake, with views towards the Nanga Parbat massif when the weather is clear.
The route is seasonal, running only while Deosai’s roads are clear of snow. Some areas beyond Astore have entry restrictions for foreign visitors, so this trip stays on the open routes. We confirm conditions before you travel.
