Can You Travel from Islamabad to Skardu in One Day?
By air, yes — comfortably. By road, technically yes, but it is a poor plan. Flights to Skardu depart Islamabad in the morning and land about an hour later, so you can be in Skardu before lunch.
Driving it in a single day means 16 to 18 hours behind the wheel, most of it on mountain roads, with a large share of it in the dark. Three things make that unwise rather than merely tiring: fatigue on narrow sections above the Indus, the fact that any landslide or clearance delay turns a long day into an overnight one anyway, and the reality that you arrive in Skardu with nothing left for your first day there.
If you are driving, plan an overnight stop — Besham, Dasu or Chilas, depending on your start time — and treat the road journey as two days. Most travellers who do it this way describe the second day as the best drive of the trip.

- Where you start and stop. Islamabad is a large city and Skardu is a valley. A start point in Islamabad’s F-sectors and a finish at Skardu Airport is a measurably different journey from Rawalpindi to Skardu bazaar.
- Which route you take. The Karakoram Highway route and the Babusar Pass route are genuinely different lengths.
- Diversions. Landslide detours and construction diversions on the Karakoram Highway add kilometres that no mapping tool anticipates.
For planning, the distance matters less than the time. A 700 km drive on a motorway is a long day. The same distance through the Indus gorges is two.

The journey uses three separate roads, and each behaves differently. Understanding where they hand over to one another explains where the hours actually go.

The single most useful thing to know about this route is that the last leg is no longer the hard one. Before the Jaglot–Skardu Road upgrade, Jaglot to Skardu was the section that turned a long drive into a two-day trip. Today the difficult hours are in the middle — the Besham to Chilas corridor — and that is where your buffer time should go.

The Hazara Motorway significantly improves early-stage road travel:
- The M-15 Hazara Motorway runs 180 km from Hasan Abdal all the way to Thakot, and has done since the Mansehra–Thakot section opened in 2020. You stay on motorway until Thakot, then join the Karakoram Highway (N-35)

Babusar Pass is a seasonal route, not a year-round alternative. It runs Islamabad → Abbottabad → Naran → Babusar Pass → Chilas, rejoining the Karakoram Highway at Chilas, and adds roughly 60–70 km to the journey.
The pass typically opens between late May and early July and closes with the first sustained snowfall, usually in October. Those dates are not fixed — they are announced each year once crews have cleared the snow. In 2026 the pass reopened on 25 May, with advice to travel in daylight only and to avoid stopping in exposed sections. It can also close mid-season after heavy rain or flooding.
Plan the Karakoram Highway route by default and treat Babusar as a bonus. If it is open when you travel, it is the more scenic of the two. If it is not, nothing about your trip changes.
